JEFF WALL. Als er zoiets als de platoonse idee van de ideale publikatie gewijd aan een hedendaagse kunstenaar bestaat, dan is “Jeff Wall” vermoedelijk een goede aardse benadering. Een boek op catalogusformaat, lavishly illustrated zoals dat heet, met Walls gehele oeuvre. Met name de vele opgenomen vraaggesprekken en de teksten van Wall zijn uiterst verhelderend. Het interview met T.J. Clark, Serge Guilbaut en Anne Wagner is een must: het is meer een debat dan een vraaggesprek, een intellectuele thriller met Walls werk als inzet. De ‘kritische theorie’ vliegt Wall om de oren. Clark: “(...) I am questioning this notion of the isolated, hypnotically powerful, controlled work of art as a means to entrench the image as part of a certain régime of art. And that régime is so closed, so completely entered into your work that there seems to me the possibility that the picture dictates to the viewer a reading in terms of the kind of subjectivity which has had to be criticized deeply in the past two decades.” De dialecticus Wall laat zich natuurlijk niet zo gemakkelijk klemzetten: “Don’t you think it is rather unsatisfying to suggest that, because there is an ideological concept of the legal person - who is a legal possessor of property and derives personhood from that concept of property - that we should totalize that to the point where we can no longer accept any form of individuation as legitimate? Things are, of course, more complicated.” Terwijl Clark en collega’s in de jaren ’60 verworven inzichten tot dogma’s laten verstenen, blijft Wall intellectueel en artistiek in beweging.

Een andere recente publicatie is de monografie “Jeff Wall. Simple indication” van Frédéric Migayrou, eveneens geïllustreerd met het volledige oeuvre van Wall, maar nu in abominabele zwartwit-reprodukties. Een gedegen analyse, maar misschien iets te lang uitgesponnen; wellicht had de auteur zich beter in een kort essay op enkele werken kunnen concentreren. Af en toe krijgt men de indruk dat Migayrou meer in de œuvres van Adorno, Barthes, Benjamin en Derrida dan in dat van Wall is geïnteresseerd. Een duidelijk geval van wat Wall bij zichzelf als “kritische iconofobie” heeft gediagnosticeerd. Verschenen bij La Lettre Volée, Overwinningsstraat 124, 1060 Brussel (02/538.41.59). Bij Walls zomertentoonstelling in Wolfsburg werd de catalogus “Landscapes and other pictures” uitgegeven met teksten van Camiel van Winkel en Jeff Wall.
